Robotic Assisted
Knee Replacement
The MAKO robotic arm is a surgical robot that assists surgeons performing knee replacement surgery.
This approach to knee replacement is new to Ireland. I was personally trained in this technique by expert surgeons based in Australia who pioneered this innovative surgery.
Over the last few years this technique has become popular worldwide due to numerous advantages:
potentially shortened recovery times
you may even be able to go home the same day
improved mobility
improved healing and pain
The robotic arm is used as a guide so that only damaged/arthritic bone is removed. It also increases the accuracy of the placement of the knee replacement when compared to traditional methods. This means the knee will feel more natural and helps you to return to your active lifestyle sooner. The lifespan of your implant should also be increased as more accurately positioned implants last longer.
Your Recovery
Pre and post-operative management is important to the success of your replacement. I will guide you through the recovery process before undergoing surgery.
I strongly believe that post-operative pain management and early mobilisation are critical to the success of the operation. Once you are in the recovery room following surgery you will be carefully monitored and looked after.
Physiotherapy is a crucial part of the recovery process. Your body will need to adjust to the knee implant. You will be shown rehabilitation exercises to perform to promote mobility and knee function following the surgery.
A few weeks after your surgery a follow up appointment will be scheduled so we can review your progress and how the recovery has been going for you.
