Direct Anterior

Hip Replacement

The minimally invasive anterior approach to hip replacement is a new technique to Ireland. I was personally trained in this technique by top surgeons based in Australia.

This type of surgery is typically performed in patients that experience stiffness and persistent hip pain.

Over the last few years this technique has become popular worldwide due to numerous advantages:

  • potentially shortened recovery times

  • you may even be able to go home the same day

  • improved mobility

  • improved healing and pain

This is due in part to the anterior approach not requiring any cuts to be made through the muscles. Any damaged/arthritic cartilage is removed, and a hip replacement is put in. Once you are in the recovery room following surgery you will be carefully monitored and looked after.

Your Recovery

Pre and post-operative management is important to the success of your replacement. I will guide you through the recovery process before undergoing surgery. I strongly believe that postoperative pain management and early mobilisation are critical to the success of the operation.

Physiotherapy is a crucial part of the recovery process. Your body will need to adjust to the hip implant.

You will be shown rehabilitation exercises to perform to promote mobility and hip function following the surgery.

A few weeks after your surgery a follow up appointment will be scheduled so we can review your progress and how the recovery has been going for you.
